Management lesson from The Bridge Riddle

Most of us come across the Bridge Riddle sometime before, it is all about optimizing time to cross the bridge. Here is the riddle

You, an assistance, a jenitor and a scientist have to cross a wooden bridge in 17 minutes. The bridge is weak and only able to carry the weight of
two of them at a time. Because they are in a rush and the light is
fading they must cross in the minimum time possible and must carry a
torch (flashlight,) on each crossing.

They only have one torch and it can’t be thrown. Because of their
different fitness levels and some minor injuries they can all cross at
different speeds. You can cross in 1 minute, assistance in 2 minutes, the janitor
in 5 minutes and the scientist in 10 minutes.

As explained in the video the key decision is to reply on the assistant who is comparatively less efficient than “You”, the assistant takes double time to cross the bridge than “You”. The assistant is taken first to other end and kept on other end so that he/she can come back with torch to pick up “You” to pass the bridge with time.

So what is management learning here ?
What I have learned from the solution is that even if you are key performer of the team it is worth passing responsibility to other team member for optimal team performance. It is not necessary to take responsibility of each thing on you considering no one can do it better than you.

State pattern falls under the category of Behavioral patterns. State design pattern comes in picture when a system’s behavior is depends on its own state or some other resource’s state. If an implementation is depends on the states, we end up with snarl of conditional statement every where in code. A very neat approach to deal with such situation is to separate out every state’s behavior and use them where ever they are applicable. Eclipse command framework core expression: Property tester

Addition to Eclipse command framework series, this post explains use of property tester to control command’s enable/visible properties. In earlier post we have tried declarative way to achieve same thing but property tester gives us more control. Property tester is associated with, tester class which implements PropertyTester.java, a namespace and set of property which it supports. We can refer this property tester using its namespace + a property name. It gives you call back to test() method with property name as parameter inside property tester class.
